De-Po Skinny Theme: Thanks, Derek!

One of those tedious admin posts.

I was tired of the tiny green-blue text and general busy-ness of my previous theme, so I've stripped everything back today and gone with Derek Powazek's De-Po Skinny.

Doubtless I'll want to mess with the look of it in the future, but this will definitely work for now. Flickr photos at the top, too!

Writing About Actionscript 3

I've been programming interactive maps visualisations using Flash and Actionscript 3 for almost a year now. Actionscript 3 code is what's behind the scenes of most the Flash work I've been involved with at Stamen so far: Trulia Hindsight, Digg Arc, Twitter Blocks, Modest Maps and more.

So in the spirit of writing about what's important to me (and what I'm actually doing) instead of only writing tangential asides, I'm going to start writing occasional notes on Actionscript 3 here. Hopefully the ideas explored will contribute to my upcoming workshop at Etech in San Diego in March.

I considered starting a new blog, but I've had to deal with my fractured blogging personae twice before already. Hopefully there'll be enough visualisation and project links to keep non-coders interested.

All kinds of people read this blog for all kinds of reasons, you might not care who I spent New Year with and that's OK with me. The actionscript posts will be tagged with as3, if that's all you're interested in you can subscribe to a feed of them here. (The same is true of the Processing posts, which have a feed here).

Processing Hacks Fixed

Sadly (due to my neglect as sys-admin) processinghacks.com hasn't been accepting new edits/users since I moved hosts a few months ago. I finally got around to fixing it today, so everything should be working now.

The site hasn't quite reached the ambitious heights I had in mind for it when toxi and I first put the wiki together and drafted the contents. Some of the hack suggestions are out of date now, and many of the existing hacks don't work with the latest release yet. That said, I hope to put some time towards kicking it into shape over the upcoming weeks and I'd be delighted if you'd join me.

I should also mention that there's a good incentive to get your hacks written up, because we're planning to move Processing Hacks to processing.org - you might have seen a note about that in the Learning section. Fame and fortune (or at least some geeky glory) await!

If You’re Reading This… Success!

I've moved all my hosting (this site and Processing Blogs/Hacks) over to pair.com. The Processing sites worked right away (give or take a few permissions hiccups with the hacks site) but I messed up the DNS settings for my own site so that's taken a bit longer. Moving the files and database was super easy though, bless nomadic software and all its superficial complexities.

I'm pretty sure I haven't lost any email, but these things are always less certain than they should be. If you've sent me anything today and I didn't get back to you, please try again.

Processing Blogs status

Apologies to the readers and writers of Processing Blogs for the recent downtime.

Our host machine was experiencing unusual load, and both Steve and I were away on holiday last week and didn't want to risk it going down and affecting all our other sites. I'm experimenting with Wordpress cache plugins and will probably offload the Processing Blogs feed to Feedburner, but normal service should be resumed for the time being.
